RENTON — Alex Roldan has officially entered concussion protocol and been ruled out of Wednesday’s game against the Houston Dynamo. Roldan came out of Saturday’s game against Minnesota United in the 1st minute after clashing heads with Devin Padelford.
Cristian Roldan, who missed a significant portion of last season while dealing with concussion symptoms, said he felt good about his brother’s condition, all things considered.
“He’s in good spirits,” Cristian Roldan said following Monday’s training session. “I think it’s something that will pass by pretty fast. He was already talking about going on the trip just to be with the team, which says a lot about where he’s at.
“For him to be able to come out of the game and not be at any more risk, makes me feel a lot better about how I perceive his situation. They did the smart thing by pulling him out.”
No worse for wear
Albert Rusnák also came out of the game with what looked like could be a significant injury following a hard tackle that ended up resulting in Moses Nyman being red-carded. But Rusnák was back out in full training on Monday, showing no outward effects and will be available to play.
“He’s got a big scrape down his Achilles’,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said. “He let everyone see it, he’s proud of it.”
Pedro makes progress
Pedro de la Vega will not travel with his teammates to Houston, but he was a full participant in training for the first time since last playing against the Vancouver Whitecaps on May 18. Schmetzer said they want de la Vega to get at least one week of full training, and possibly a bit more, before putting him back on the field. Reading a tea leaves a bit, it seems as though the home match against the Chicago Fire on June 29 might be a reasonable target.
“I think it’s a slight positive,” Schmetzer said. “Things are working in the right direction.
“We just to make sure his body can take the load. He’s going to be super excited to come back. I don’t want to hold that enthusiasm back. I need him to just be happy and joyous he’s back on the field, but I also need to be sure we don’t put him at risk.”
Jon Bell waits to join Jamaica
Jon Bell has been named to Jamaica’s Copa America roster, but will be allowed to remain with the Sounders through the Dynamo match. After the match, he’ll join Jamaica who is already in Houston for training ahead of their match against Mexico on Saturday.
